NAVY OBSERVER Entry

For those with a yearning for the skies, the Navy needs Naval Air Operations Officer (NAOO) who act as airborne coordinators of maritime warfare. NAO officers operate various state-of-the-art equipment including sonics, radars, sonars and communication equipment. The NAO officer gets an opportunity to participate in all facets of naval operations onboard the “eyes of the Fleet: the maritime patrol aircraft or ship-borne multi-role helicopters”. You would also be responsible forfiring weapons, as and when the need arises.

Job Profile

  • Navy Aviators are part of the Navy Air Arm which is the aviation branch of Indian Navy and fulfil the roles of Navy Pilots, Observers and Technical Officers.
  • Navy Observer is a naval executive officer who acts as airborne coordinators of maritime warfare in Indian Navy. They operate the state of equipment like sonics, radars, sonars and communication equipment. They also fly the helicopter, multi-role aircraft.
  • Observers can specialize in courses like Communications, Anti-Submarine Warfare. The entire process of prosecuting a target, locating, gathering, analyzing and designating remains domain of Naval Observer.

Training Process

  • Navy Observers undergo complete 22 weeks of Naval Orientation course at the INA, Ezhimala. It is followed by training at Observer School, Kochin. Upon the completion of training, candidates will be awarded ‘Observer Wings.’
  • Later in the career, officers are nominated for in-service specialisation courses including Qualified Navigation Instructor Course.

Qualification

A candidate should BE/B.Tech in any discipline from AICTE recognized institute/university with minimum 60% marks. The candidates must have 60% aggregate marks in class X & XII and minimum 60% marks in English in class X or XII.

Eligibility

Both male and females are eligible to become Navy Observer. It is noteworthy that till 1992 women were inducted only in medical service but post-1992 over the years have been inducted in various branches of Navy. Sub Lieutenant Kumudini Tyagi and Sub Lieutenant Riti Singh have become the first two female naval officers to become Navy Observers in Indian Navy.
